Boston Piano History

In 1991 the Steinway & Sons piano company began working with the Kawai piano manufacturer in Japan to build the Boston piano to Steinway specifications. By this arrangement, Steinway can offer their patented technologies as a lower cost to their customers.

Steinway Piano History

Steinway & Sons was established in Manhattan, New York, in 1853 by Heinrich Steinweg, a German piano maker who immigrated to the United States in 1850. The company quickly grew to become one of the most respected piano manufacturers in the world and remains one of the most recognized names in the piano industry today.

While Steinway & Sons is no longer owned or operated by the Steinweg family, Steinway pianos continue to be handcrafted in New York, maintaining the company’s long tradition of quality and craftsmanship. Over time, Steinway has also expanded its family of instruments to include Boston and Essex pianos. Boston pianos, designed by Steinway & Sons, are manufactured in Japan, while Essex pianos, also designed by Steinway & Sons, are manufactured in China.

Together, these lines offer a range of instruments inspired by Steinway’s design philosophy, making the Steinway family of pianos accessible to a wider variety of pianists.
